South Philadelphia residents gathered at Mifflin Square Park on Saturday afternoon for free blood, glucose and other medical screenings with volunteers from Thomas Jefferson University.
But, the health-focused event expanded beyond vital signs.
The community spent the day celebrating ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of the Whitman park, as Southeast Asian Mutual Assistance Associations Coalition Inc. received two grants totaling $70,000 from Sen. Larry Farnese and Rep. Elizabeth Fiedler, made possible through the state Department of Community and Economic Development. SEAMAAC, a more than 30-year-old Philadelphia-based nonprofit working to empower immigrants, refugees and marginalized communities, plans to allocate $50,000 from Farnese’s office to its SoPhiE food truck, which features immigrant chefs.

This past weekend, Jefferson University hosted a free health screening at Mifflin Square Park for the community. Access to free blood and glucose screenings are valuable and we appreciate all the volunteers who made this event possible. In addition, State Representative Fielder and State Senator Farnese enjoyed iced coffee from the SoPhiE food truck and shared with the community their ongoing support for the park, South 7th Street, and the food truck! It was a fun filled weekend at Mifflin Square Park and we are excited to keep enjoying the different summer programs!

Jefferson University will be coming to Mifflin Square Park this Saturday, July 13, and they will be offering free health screening for our community. This is a great opportunity to get you blood and sugar checked. There will also be a special announcement made by Senator Farnese and Representative Fiedler at 3:00 PM.

On Friday, June 28, Modero and SEAMAAC co-hosted Karaoke in the Park and it was a success! We heard so many great songs from all ages and even ended the night with a competition. The first place winner got a free meal from the SoPhiE food truck. Thank you to everyone who participated and we hope that the fun you had added sunshine to your day despite the rain!

Join us for karaoke this Friday, June 28, at Mifflin Square Park! Modero will bring the music so make sure to bring the funk!
